The PTA was founded in 1897 by Alice McLellan Birney, a teacher, and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, a parent and also a Missourian. These women felt there was a strong need in our country for someone to advocate on behalf of all children. At that particular time in history it was common for children to work in large factories instead of attending school. One of the first issues these women addressed after they formed the PTA was the need for child labor laws in our country.
While times have changed the need to advocate for children has not. PTA is the single largest child advocacy organization in the country. At the local, state and national level, PTA volunteers work to make sure the voice of all our children is heard. Every Child. One Voice.
Your $6 membership, not much more than a cup of specialty coffee or a ticket to the movies, supports not only volunteer’s efforts at SVJH but also at the state and national level. In times of deep budget cuts across the nation it is important our membership stays strong as we compete with special interest groups and big lobbyist. Our goal is to make sure the needs of our children do not take a back seat or get forgotten altogether.
Please consider becoming a member of our PTSA. Annual individual memberships are only $6. As a special offer this year, students who join will be eligible to attend the February mixer free of charge. Simply download the membership form, fill out the information and then drop it off at the school’s front desk with a check or cash.
